Whether it's trick-or-treating or a Halloween party, the costumes are often the focal point of Halloween. Many people go all out on their costumes, as they can make or break a person's Halloween. With a little creativity, both adults and children can use everyday items and apparel and find other products to make a standout Halloween costume.
Certain people will be surprised how their old clothes hanging in the closet or lying in a storage box can be repurposed for Halloween costumes. For example, a father's old business suit can be shortened and tailored for his son as a businessman or politician costume. Find a tie-dye t-shirt or an old shirt to tie-dye and bell-bottoms and dress as a hippie. For skeleton costume, use a black tracksuit or hoodie and black pants and spray paint or glue a paper skeleton design. Children can dress as farmers using an old plaid shirt, overalls and a straw hat. With a bandana and eyepatch, people might wear a pirate costume. Parents might also cut up an orange sweatshirt or sew up an orange poncho to create a pumpkin costume for their children.
Many household items might work as part of a Halloween costume. Old bedsheets make perfect ghost costumes. Brooms are a must-have for witch costumes. To dress as a vampire or superhero, use old curtains to create capes. Use a combination of toilet paper and white fabric strips to make a mummy costume. Aluminum foil can be wrapped around cardboard to make a sword or be part of an outfit (ie. knight or robot).
Makeup in itself remains an important part of Halloween costumes. Green face paint works for witches and aliens and white paint works for clowns and zombies. You might also mix chocolate syrup and ketchup to create fake blood. Those who don't own makeup can buy inexpensive face paint, including Mehron Makeup's Tri-Color Makeup Palette.
Paper mache masks require liquid homemade glue and strips of newspaper. You can use scissors to cut the strips as well as construction paper and thin fabrics. Parents should use heavy-duty scissors when cutting thick fabric or cardboard boxes that are part of the costume. Use super glue or two-sided tape to put pieces of a costume together, such as a tail on a black cat costume. Of course, these products should be handled by parents or at least, under the strict supervision of an adult.
